How to increase Vocabulary range?

  • What is range?
    • everything from one extreme to the other (ex. informal to formal or academic words)
  • Vocabulary range can expand every parts (Speaking, Writing - one of the 4 descriptors - lexical range)
  • You should have to have enough range to paraphrase using synonyms so you don't repeat yourself
  • Active vocabs(speaking and writing) and passive vocabs(reading and listening)
  1. Where to get the Vocabulary?

    1. Newspapaers are the place to go. You can get more informal opinion sections or travel, movie reviews, restaurant reviews with different topics.
    2. USA Today / AM New York - understandable vocabs
    3. NewYork Times - high level vocabs
    4. The Economist - really high level vocabs
    5. City papers
    6. NPR.org (radio station but you can also get transcripts and reading the articles, variety of accents as well)
    7. You can't rely on just one resource, read all the levels of newspapers.
  2. How to record it?

    1. Choose 5 words, decide on limits
    2. Have a notebook just dedicated to vocabulary
    3. Learn these words in contexts
      1. Clues about where you read them
      2. What kind of article you read
      3. What was the story about
      4. Write down title and one sentence summary in your own words or in english
  3. How to remember it?

    1. Develop a system and find a schedule that works for you
    2. Everyday look at 5 pages, once a week look at 10 pages and review all the words 2-3 times a week!
    3. take the vocabs to where you can see easily
